as an english geezer, I don't know what the score is in America when it comes to the format that you use. I've heard from friends that c.d mixers have become much better recently, and that you can mix as well with them as you ever could with technics. Has anybody out there got one? If so is it any good? Also are you finding it hard to get the latest releases on vinyl, 'cause rumour has it that vinyl is dead and buried in the States. Oh and if anybody could give me any idea of who the top acts are at the moment then I'd be grateful. thanks u u k k ccccc hh hh rrrrr ii sssss u u k k cc hh hh rrr ss u u kk cc hhhhhh rrr ii sssss u u k k cc hh hh rrr ii ss uuuu k k ccccc hh hh rrr ii sssss

I used a CD mixer when I did a weekly here in Washington State, and I know that not many people mix from CDs, but that's mostlybecause they just don't know about 'em. Vinyl bigotry is still alive and well in the states.

No, no no no no.... It's hard to find *good* stuff on CD these days... Only the majors and larger indies press CDs other than just compilations...

a friend of mine has the denon 2700F which is the new model DJ CD player and while it is a great improvement on the 2000, i still find turntables far easier to deal with. of course the main problem is that underground dance music still gets here on vinyl long before the CDs arrive, so if you want to be cutting edge, it's gotta be vinyl. vinyl is dead and buried as far as pop music goes - you don't see new pop albums coming out on vinyl. but for the dance scene, vinyl 12"s are still Where It's At. you have to go to specialist dance shops to get them, but i gather it's the same over in the UK.

you mean dance music? depends on the area of the country. here in SF that funky house thing still gets a lot of play. i just buy all the top UK releases anyway... my favorite of the moment would be "the cat" by system exclusive on Eastern Bloc. Vinyl seems to be gettting harder and harder to find now... And more spread out. You're much more likely to find one Orb 12" at one shop, and one Aphex Twin 12" at another, than find anywhere with a really good selection. It's quite disturbing in a way, but then again, the Orb's 'Little Fluffy Clouds - Remixes' 12" was $10 here.. same price as a CD single. bah. -- ian

$10??? Wow... Usually import 12"s aren't more than $9 or $9.50... Is that IMHO superfluous 12" in incredible demand or something?

Ummm, for fear of stoking another flame war, please don't take this wrong, but the music I have come down to "really caring about" is released more on CD than anything else. I speak of labels like Planet Dog, Infonet, Beyond, GPR, and of course Astralwerks. My guess is that there may be a sort of backlash against vinyl simply because it is a dance format. These artists and labels want you to LISTEN to the music and not futz with it or write it off as dancefloor fodder.
